Top 3 Unique Plants for Beginners

’ve owned a lot of different plants over the years, and I love a good plant challenge, but if you’re just starting out here are the top 3 plants I’d recommend.

First, it’s important to talk about light. You need at least an unobstructed east-facing window. No large trees or overhang blocking the sunlight. Light is the most important factor when it comes to owning houseplants. Without good light, it’s nearly impossible to water correctly, and your plants will slowly deteriorate and will be susceptible to pests.

The plants I’m going to highlight will be equally happy in or within a foot of east, west or south windows.

#1 : Pothos “Snow Queen”

Such an easy, forgiving stunner. These plants can take some neglect, but with all plants I err on the side of underwatering. Overwatering is the quickest way to kill a plant. Water when the soil is dry as far down as you can feel, or with these pothos, when the leaves get a little droopy. Give them a good soak—they should also be in a pot that has good drainage, so you’ll probably want to water over the sink to avoid a mess on the floor.

#2 : Xerosicyos Danguyi “Silver Dollar Vine”

Silver Dollar Vine

This plant can be a little more elusive, but if you can get your hands on it, don’t let go! Minimal watering requirements, happy in a range of light, and is pest resistant. These are also just so gorgeous and unique—they look higher maintenance than they are.

#3 : Peperomia “Hope”

Peperomia Hope

And finally, Peperomia Hope. This plant has been such a quick grower—hasn’t been prone to pests, and requires minimal care. Water when the soil is completely dry and watch it grow! As long as it has good light (as with all the others) you’re good to go.

I do also recommend fertilizing your plants with a 9-3-6 ratio once a month spring through fall. This will help give them the boost they need during the growing season.

As always, feel free to contact me with your plant questions. I offer virtual plant consultations to help with your specific needs.

If you’re just starting out, these are great plants to put on the top of your wishlist.
