How to Grow a Fiddle Leaf Fig
The fiddle leaf fig (ficus lyrata) is the plant I get the most questions about. Most owners say they’ve lost most of their leaves, aren’t seeing new growth, or have large brown patches on the foliage.
When I start asking them questions about care, the common theme I’ve seen is the location of the plant is for aesthetics, not optimal light. You may have a spot in your house you’d prefer the plant to be, but that’s rarely the spot it will get the best light.
Ficus lyrata need A TON of light. A south facing large window is ideal, a west facing window is next best. If you don’t have either of those, I’d highly recommend adding a grow light.
Without adequate light these plants are very prone to root rot, which is one reason you could be seeing brown spots on your leaves. Their growth will also slow dramatically.
Once you have the correct amount of light for your plant the rest comes quite easily. Your plant will use water more efficiently, reducing your risk of root rot, and will be more healthy overall.
If you find yourself in need of a grow light, I highly recommend these Rousseau Plant Care lights. I have some of my ficus under them and they have consistently put out new growth. They’re also gorgeous! You can find them here. My code HOUSEPLUSPLANT15 is good for 15% off your order.
